Paint Quantity Calculator
Paint Quantity (L) Estimator
Calculate quantity of paint for an area
This calculator estimates the amount of paint you will need to paint any area. Input the values into the estimator to get an estimate of the amount for litres you will need to complete the job. Our calculator will also calculate wastage as well based on the application type.
1. Entering the Surface Area: Measure the total area of your boat you want to paint (in square meters).
2. Specify the Number of Coats: Decide how many coats of paint you plan to apply (usually 2 for best results).
3. Enter Paint Coverage: Check your paint tin for its coverage rate or choose from some of our options (e.g., 10 m² per liter).
4. The type of application will also effect the amount of wastage so choose from the drop down options.
Finally click Calculate, and the tool will tell you how many litres of paint you'll need.
Finding the area you need to paint on your boat
Depending on what part of the boat you are painting this will affect the amount of surface area you will need to cover. Use our calculator to work out the area you want to paint and then use our Paint Quantity Estimator to find how many litres you need.

How to calculate the below water line area on your boat
If you are painting below the waterline (wetted area) of your boat, yacht or other kind of vessel, we suggest using the following method to do so.
The wetted surface area or below water line area is roughly proportional to the size of the boat’s hull underwater. This depends on:
The Length at the waterline (LWL):
The width of the boat.
How deep the boat sits in the water, if it has a keel and what kind of vessel it is. The basic formula to use is:
Formula: Base Area = LWL×B×T\text{Base Area} = LWL \times B \times T
Different boat types (sailboat, powerboat, etc.) have different shapes, so we multiply by a shape coefficient (C)
Sailboats: C=0.7
Powerboats: C = 0.75
Catamarans: C=0.65
Formula:Wetted Area (without keel)=Base Area×C\text{Wetted Area (without keel)} = \text{Base Area} \times C
If the boat has a keel, the area of the keel is added to the wetted area:
Total Wetted Area= Wetted Area (without keel)+Keel Area\text{Total Wetted Area} = \text{Wetted Area (without keel)} + \text{Keel Area}
This gives you a good estimate of how much of the boat is in contact with the water. Input your values into the estimator and it will do this calculation for you.
